Marginalized students are more likely to end up at open-access, under-resourced colleges. Graduation rates are lower and many of these students leave the schools with more debt than their white counterparts. 86.6% of black students borrow federal loans compared to 59.9% of white students and are five times more likely to default on their loans due to lower earnings post-grad. These are all factors that affect the student’s ability to graduate with a degree that holds value in the labor market, leaving students and their families lost and confused.
BLCD’s Youth Construct program will first focus on building a program for the local youths of Harlem, with future intentions of expanding. 11th and 12th graders will be given the opportunity to apply for the program through their curriculum and career counselors. The mission is to create a community for these students where they can gain the skills they need to succeed now and in the future. Currently there are certificates, undergraduate and graduate opportunities for adults, construction trade concentrations in the High Schools, but not enough access to the lucrative industry of construction administration.
This curriculum would allow students the opportunity to learn sound construction administration and back office principles that drive the industry. They will cultivate practical and formal skills through classroom and paid internships, construction bookkeeping principles, utilization of project management software, Industry mandated OSHA safety certifications and their significances for management and field staff, the new digital onsite & remote environment and it’s effects on the construction industry. BLCD’s Youth Construct would provide a direct response to the increasing need for skilled back office construction administration for both, public (receives government and or City funds) and private projects.
The construction administration certificate provides options to transition into the multitude of construction administrative professions available which include but are not limited to Construction Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, Project Associate, Expediter and Construction Office Manager. These positions could potentially generate a serious interest in the following professions:
3. Business Owner
4. Real Estate Development
